- A beautiful yet forgotten tale of a bygone era: a rare approach to the magnificent history of liners
- Superbly illustrated with many unpublished photographs
- Of interest to maritime historians and architectural/decorative readers
- Written by maritime’s biggest star – William H. Miller
Prestigious ocean liners conjure an image of luxury: the great salons and smoking rooms, suites, staterooms and even indoor swimming pools.
High Style on the High Seas: Passenger Ship Interiors studies the décor of ocean liners over a glorious 100 years. It begins with the likes of the
Mauretania, commissioned in 1907, and shows her Edwardian flourish and finery – the palm court days.
We move into the 1920s and 1930s to art nouveau, German Bauhaus and, of course, the high glamour of art deco. Ships include the
Paris, the innovative
Ile de France,
Bremen and the stunning
Normandie and
Queen Mary.
Then there is post-war modern, ‘mid-century’ as it is dubbed today, and finally the floating resorts, the contemporary of the current cruise generation.
The great glamour and high style of ocean liners, both large and small, sail forth like an armada of ships in grand review.
