The ‘Twin City’ as it came to be called in 1913, began as two different towns. The town of Salem developed from the minds of the Pennsylvania Moravians in order to create a haven in the North Carolina back county, Piedmont area, for a congregational village to practice inclusively their religious beliefs and lifestyles. After arriving from Pennsylvania in 1753 to their currently purchased 100,000 acre tract, Wachovia, the Moravians founded Bethabara, an outlot farming community, used until the permanent town could be built.Salem, c. 1766, became the lone central town until 1849 when out of necessity Salem Moravians created the town of Winston, a mile north of town on congregational land, so as to have a county seat town for the newly created Forsyth County, c. 1849. Salem, Winston and later Winston-Salem would trace their historical American roots from colonial times to the present time.Winston-Salem Through Time will take our readers on a journey then and now, showcasing the congregational town of East Salem and the farms and industry of West Salem in the complete town lot of Salem. Winston, the town of tobacco and textiles, is presented and the town’s evolvement into Winston-Salem ‘A City of Industry’. An added treat, never before presented in print, is a local plantation in the heart of Salem.
