For all the heroism of British fighters, every tilt at the heavyweight title since 1899 had met with failure. Many fans had arrived at the depressing conclusion that they would never see another Briton crowned. However, such despair was challenged by the arrival of Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis.

Frank Bruno had to battle through a potentially career-ending sight problem before he had even stepped into the ring. Once inside though, the power in his punches had the public wondering if the popular challenger was a potential world champion. When he was later joined by 1988 Olympic super-heavyweight gold-medal winner Lennox Lewis, dreams of British world heavyweight success suddenly looked to be more than mere hope and fantasy.

Bruno and Lewis: The Boxing Years is the account of how these two fighters changed the face of British heavyweight boxing on a global stage. The journeys of Bruno and Lewis to the world heavyweight crowns are explored through the insight of a leading boxing historian Ralph Oates, who analyses their triumphs, setbacks, and adversaries.

Oates is the author of ten books on boxing, has contributed articles and quizzes for The British Boxing Board of Control Boxing Yearbook, acted as a boxing consultant for the Guinness World Records and produced question lists for a major television quiz show on two occasions. Oates previously had his own weekly column in an Essex newspaper entitled ‘Boxing Corner’, which ran for three years and a further column, ‘Short Jabs’, which appeared in a Norfolk newspaper. His first book for Fonthill Media is Bruno and Lewis: The Boxing Years (2017) followed by A Round of Boxing: A Trip Through Time (2019).
